DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY

 

          The undergraduate course in Botany was started in the academic year 1981 at Government Degree College Porumamilla. The Department of Botany strives to distinguish itself in various teaching and research fields of the undergraduate course. The department establishes, maintains, and disseminates fundamental plant biology knowledge and provides leadership in the biological sciences  producing the best plant sciences human resources and helping them to realize their full potential for society.  The department provides effective teaching methods to improve students from poor educational and financial backgrounds. Botany curriculum covers modern scientific trends and subjects such as Cell and Molecular biology; Genetics, Plant breeding, Plant Biotechnology, etc.

  • Lecturers are eminent and are actively involved in various committees of the college for effective decentralized governance.
  • Organizing workshops, and symposia on thrust areas of plant science in collaboration with other scientific bodies.
  • We have well-maintained laboratories and trained technical staff.
  • Active live collections of Medicinal plants in local Nallamala Forest area maintained in the Herbal botanical garden in our college campus
  • Environmental awareness programmers like World Environment Day, World Ozone Day, Vana Mahotsav, World Water Day, World Wild life Week were organized every year by the Department.
  •  In addition to the above, involvement of students and staff in Clean and Green Programmes, Swatch Bharat -Swacth Bharath activities, Green audits help in bring awareness in the society.

 

Objectives of the department:

  • To impart knowledge of the classification scope of plant diversity in various methods of diversity.
  • To provide a student-centered, profession-focused, multidisciplinary in a natural investigation environment.
  • To teach students scientific methods, skills, and attitudes to understand all aspects of plant life.
  • To empower the students with knowledge and skills of Botany in tune with the changing global scenario for pursuing research and procuring employment in the allied areas and to make the department as the center of excellence.
  • Organizing Environmental Awareness Activities and Developing Social Responsibilities in the students as best practices bring a personification to the department
